I haven't really settled on whether I like Melodics for keyboard yet. You also can't get a score view of the music to play to, which is disappointing for drums but I really don't like for keyboard. I don't think there's any equivalent of Flowkeys big library of recognisable songs to play along to, which is a shame. There have been a couple of things that could be improved or I'm not sure about. There's also an active Slack community as well as this reddit, and the Melodics team seem to be very responsive in it. Probably not relevant to you, but something I found much better on the Melodics side. They've also added 'records' so you can track your progress against particular aspects of playing which could be useful.įlowkey also doesn't seem to care about timing in the slightest, which is kind of strange, whereas Melodics judges timing even in the keys section. Looking back at some of the earlier lessons I can see how much I've progressed since I started, and there's a huge amount of content to work towards yet. Whether it's rudiments or some other thing I've been curious about I've been able to find useful lessons. But the tagging has been the best part for me. The way the rest of the content is split up seems usefully structured, with clearly marked grades. The introductory guided path took me through some basics (some of which I was happy to find I remembered) but progresses sanely through some interesting challenges that I've really had to work at. In contrast I've found Melodics to be much more usefully structured for both keys and drums. The biggest difference I've found so far is that while Flowkey covers the basics well, as soon as you get into more intermediate content it seems to have no real structure and never really explains why you're learning some of things you're learning. That's been useful as Flowkey gave me something to compare Melodics to.

I picked up 3 months of Flowkey free with the keyboard and started a Melodics trial for the drums.

When I started up again I really wanted a modern equivalent of that software as I found book-based learning to be too lacking in feedback. The previous times I'd tried learning I used a play-along book and bought some of the classics like stick control, but I also had a copy of Roland's drum tutor software, DT-1 I think it was. So I bought a keyboard and an Octapad and got started. With a change of circumstances and a big birthday I suddenly found I had the space, time and best of all mid-life crisis excuse to do it again. Enjoyed it but never quite got it to stick as leaving even the smallest thing set up was never popular at home.

Never played an instrument much, but had a couple of goes at learning the drums over the years.
